The environmental havoc that the plastic is wreaking on our planet is finally getting the attention that it deserves. The world is admitting the grave dangers of plastic pollution, and it’s snowballing! But so is public awareness and the determination to eradicate the problem, which is our silver lining.

Plastic pollution is not something that has emerged yesterday. Around 380 million tons of plastic is produced in the world, annually! And about 20 percent of it ends up in the ocean, and the rest of it ends up as pollutants, entering our natural environment and oceans.

What causes Plastic Pollution?

Plastic pollution is caused by the accumulation of plastic waste that includes cigarette butts, bottle caps, plastic cutlery, bottles, and other secondary plastics. Due to their chemical composition, they are completely non-biodegradable, and so they lay intact for millions of years.

As single-use plastic items such as the spoon, fork, plate, bowl are different from biodegradable disposable tablewarethey are dumped in landfills for their disposal. The waste is then carried by the winds and pushed into sewers, rivers and finally oceans where the marine animals are often choked to death due to its ingestion.

How to achieve a non-plastic Future?

From using cloth bags to eco-friendly disposable tableware, there are plenty of ways to reduce plastic plates. But reaching to the root cause of the problem is that will bring long term solution. Here is a simple and easy method which is formulated to reduce the amount of plastic use in our daily lives:

REFUSE

Refuse to purchase any product non-recyclable product. Avoid using plastic bottles, polybags, straws, cups, plates, and switch to eco-friendly disposable cutlery. Use long-lasting glass or metal alternatives at home. For single use tableware, switch to sugarcane pulp plates, compostable soup bowls, disposable wooden spoons, and biodegradable disposable glasses at home and workplace. This will pave the way for a far more sustainable lifestyle as this tableware is made of natural resources like sugarcane pulp. Hence, they are compostable and biodegradable.

REUSE

Bring home either eco-friendly disposable tableware or metal containers that are durable and can be reused to store food and beverages. This way, a great reduction in plastic waste can be observed without compromising with convenience. Reusable glassware or metal containers can easily replace plastics and in place of single-use plastic disposable we can switch to sugarcane pulp products from Ecoware. Use canvas bags to do grocery shopping and glass containers for storing food. You can also carry a reusable water bottle instead of a plastic one at work to stay hydrated while keeping the environment plastic-free.

RECYCLE

Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad are amongst the top generators of plastic in India, while other cities are at the lower index. It is estimated that only 60% of the total 25,940 tonnes of plastic produced per day gets recycled in the country. The remaining waste lie dumped in landfills or polluted the water bodies, which is why recycling is necessary!

RE-PURPOSE

Re-purpose or take something and use it for something else when you are done with it. For example, you can re-purpose scrap paper for taking notes, cans for containers, and material shavings to clean spills.

There are so many ways in which we can recycle more at home and work. Recycling things like paper, printer cartridges, and cardboard daily can dramatically bring the amount of plastic-waste down. If you use eco-friendly disposable cutlery at home or office, you can dispose of them into a composting bin. As they are made from sugarcane pulp, they are completely biodegradable and produce fertilizer that can be used in the garden area.

In the world that appears perpetually overwhelmed by eternal plastic waste, a plastic-free future might not be attained overnight. If we all take responsibility to give-up on plastic in our daily lives, a healthy and better future is possible! So stick to our 5 R`s and help India becoming a plastic-free nation.
