The term ‘Waste Segregation’ refers to the separation of dry garbage and wet garbage with the ultimate goal of reducing waste from landfills and preventing land, water and air pollution. The purpose of waste segregation is to recycle the dry waste easily and to use wet waste as fertilizer for growing plants called composting. Segregating waste also makes it easier to apply different processes like composting, recycling and incineration that can be applied to different kinds of waste.

According to Better India report, if we keep generating waste at this rate then by the year 2050, India will need a landfill that’s the size of Delhi to dump all its waste. We need to take necessary actions and we need to take them now.

Before going to the segregation practices we’d like you to understand what different types of wastes are generated on a day to day basis.

There are 3 types of Waste – Dry, Wet & E-Waste

Dry Waste– It is further divided into recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Recyclable dry waste includes- pet bottles, plastic carry bags, newspapers, glass bottles, shoes, cardboards and so on. Non-recyclable dry waste includes- used paper towels, hazardous chemical or food containers, foam materials, sanitary napkins, diapers, or other hygiene-related products.

Wet Waste- This comprises of items like fruit peels, leftovers, vegetable skins, uncooked food, coffee or tea powder, and garden waste like leaves and twigs.

E-Waste- There are three types of electronic waste you must be aware of:

Bulky: Fridge, microwave or anything is that is difficult to carry around.

Hazardous: Tubelights, light bulbs, toner cartridges, batteries, monitors and screens or anything with a chemical component.

Non-hazardous: Cables, chargers, microwaves, gadgets like laptops and phones.

Now, coming to the tips on how you can easily segregate home waste and contribute to keeping the environment clean and healthy. The change will take time, patience and a few efforts but it’s all worth it.

COMPOST! COMPOST! COMPOST!

  1. Say NO to one bin and YES to different bins for different types of waste.
  2. A majority of waste we think is useless can be recycled and also holds value for rag pickers and scrap dealers. Keep them in a separate bin and make life easier for them.
  3. Before throwing any kitchen waste remove plastic packaging it has. If it’s kept separate, it can be converted into high-quality compost that can be used for indoor plants, lawns and so on. If you don’t have a garden or need for compost, it doesn’t matter; give the compost away to a friend or neighbor and make their day. It also works out to be a great meal for the many starved animals.
  4. Send wet waste out of your home daily. Store and send dry waste out of the home, once a week.
  5. Keep a paper bag for throwing the sanitary waste.

Remember only we can protect the earth. We do not want to live on a pile of garbage. Use organic products which help us in keeping the environment healthy and safe.
